US consumer confidence index did not reach forecasts

Consumer confidence in the United States, according to the University of Michigan, fell to 90.7 points in January 2019. In December, the value of the index was 98.3 points; this month, experts expected a decrease to 96.8 points. US consumer confidence dropped to 2016 low. The attitude of American citizens to the financial situation also deteriorated to a figure of 110 points from 116.1 points in the previous month. The consumer expectations index fell from 87 to 78.3 points. Inflation expectations for the current year remained at the level of 2018 and amounted to 2.7%. The long-term results turned out to be worse than the indicator of 2018 - 2.6% versus 2.5%. The loss of American consumer confidence is associated with a slowdown in economic growth, the introduction of trade duties, and a lack of a clear monetary policy course.
